OWF (Ohio Works First) is Ohio’s ongoing, but time-limited, cash assistance program for financially eligible families. This program replaced the more familiar Aid For Dependent Children (AFDC) Program. To be eligible for OWF a family must contain at least one child under age 18 and meet all financial requirements. An eligible family can receive monthly assistance checks through the OWF program for up to 36 months after which, unless an exemption is met, they must go off cash assistance for 24 consecutive months. After at least 24 months without receiving OWF cash benefits, the family can request, but is not guaranteed up to an additional 24 months of cash assistance. In Ohio, adults are limited to no more than 60 months of lifetime OWF cash assistance eligibility.
